It was dark. Really, it felt like it was dark all the time. The only indication that maybe there was a full moon above the surface was the small rays of light reflecting down into the water, only seen through the windows on occasion.

Otherwise, artificial light was his only source of making out what was around him in this stupid submarine.

Elliott lounged on one of the benches, scrolling through his phone. He was supposed to do some sort of patrol with this girl around the sub tonight. Long nights didn't bother him, since he typically was out at bars drinking and having fun.

He hoped that maybe she'd be somewhat entertaining.

Enya was laying across his lap, her forked tail twitching every now and then.

"I don't know why the hell you're asleep. We have to get up any minute now," he said with a snort, looking down at the Houndoom.

As if by magic, he noticed Ceri Glynn arrive.

"Hey, Ceri."

It wasn’t a matter of magic, but a matter of Ceri making a stop before heading over to meet up with him, because if Rocket was going to make her stay out late wandering through the cold hallways of the submarine, she sure as hell was bringing some coffee.

Eli was surprised by her generosity, taking the coffee. But pumpkin spice? He was definitely over that. He wouldn't say that out loud though. He just nodded and held it in both of his hands.

"Thank you. I appreciate it."

With that, and the newly acquired fragrant coffee, his Houndoom finally began to wake up, her nose sniffing the air. He snorted at her.

"That's what gets you up?"

They both stand up, Enya stretching and yawning. She wagged her forked tail as she came over to sniff at Ceri.

"Are you ready to get going, then?"

A soft chuckle escapes her when the Houndoom stands thanks to the scent of coffee, and she turns to look at the pokémon.

”Aw, you’re so cute! Do you want some coffee too?”

What the Houndoom gets instead of coffee is pats, because despite her cheerful words, Ceri is all too aware of just how much coffee it takes to cause serious toxicity to a pokémon like that. It’s almost by habit that the thought crosses her mind, and yet she still smiles all the same when she looks at Elliott once again. Sheepishly, this time.

”Yeah! Though... Uhmm... Do you mind if I stay close to you? To be honest... I'm a little afraid of the dark..."

Elliott was going to open his mouth and say no, Enya absolutely did not need coffee. But Ceri seemed to know, giving her a few pats instead.

Thank god.

He sipped his drink while the two seemed to acquaint themselves before looking back at Ceri at her question. Really? She was afraid of the dark? Didn't she live on this dank submarine too?

He couldn't help but blush just a little bit.

"Um... sure. I guess that's okay..."

Ceri absolutely lives in this dank submarine too, and she absolutely has wandered through its cold corridors in the middle of the night without a single light on. It has never bothered her in the slightest, but will that stop her from using it all as a cheap excuse to stay close to him? Of course not.

Boys can be adorably dumb sometimes, and in this case, at least it’ll make patrolling a little more fun… Especially as she steps closer to him indeed, so very casually allowing her arm to touch his.

”Thanks, Elliott! You’re really sweet,” She beams as she looks up at him, ever shorter than just about everyone she meets. ”Uhmm… Do you think we’ll run into some scary ghosts or something? You'll protect me if we do, won't you?”

Elliott just grunted his reply, leading them through the sub to patrol. He would try to look around at anything, anywhere but her right now because if he did, he'd feel like he'd implode.

He was not seasoned or trained at talking to girls when it came to flirting. Or boys. Anyone.

"Huh? Protect you?"

What, she needed saving too? He hated ghosts too! Eli only took this stupid mission for the benefits.

"I mean... I guess. But Enya would do most of the protecting."

People can be classified into a lot of different categories, and admittedly, discovering where everyone she knows falls may just be a bit of a hobby of Ceri’s. With the more they talk, the more obvious Elliott’s own classification becomes, and because of it, she can’t help but smile.

It’s adorable, and it almost makes her feel bad for messing with him.

Afraid of ghosts...

Why the hell would she ask him that? Of course he wouldn't admit that he was afraid of ghosts. Or those weird unown things...

Were Unowns ghosts? They looked like it to him.

"Me? Afraid of ghosts? Of course not!" he said, trying to remain confident.

Of course, when the loud noise rattles them, Elliott reacted more that Ceri did, jumping like a cat and holding onto that hand that somehow, someway, grabbed onto his.

He had no idea he was holding onto her now.

And yet, she still holds onto his hand, giving it a gentle and light squeeze and offering an equally gentle smile in a gesture of reassurance.

When Elliott finally came back to reality, that maybe a ghost really wasn't there, he realized that he was holding Ceri's hand. And he was holding it tightly. He felt her squeeze his hand, perhaps in a reassuring way, but...

His face turned scarlet. It just embarrassed him more.

His immediate reaction was to try to drop her hand, though she was holding onto it too. Even that was embarrassing.

"Uh, yeah. You're right. Sorry."

Elliott felt her step closer, her hand still holding tightly to his. He swallowed hard, truly unable to figure out what exactly to do in this situation. He never held hands with anyone.

He was a romantic amateur. Was this even a romantic thing? Or was she just holding his hand out of fear?

He couldn't tell now.

"I... I suppose so?"

Eli didn't know. But they followed on the direction they had been heading it, and he was as tense as ever.

He looked at her as she spoke, his head full of nothing and everything at the same time. He felt overwhelmed by everything going on, by the hand holding and the prospect of ghosts being around.

"I guess maybe because our schedules never lined up?" he tried to offer.

Oh... she wanted to hang out again? Would she want to hang out like this, holding hands and drinking coffee?

"Uh... I mean... sure, we can. If we find the time to. If you aren't busy..."

Like a date? Did she want a date? Oh gods, he didn't know.
